Microsoft Buys Skype for $8.5 Billion Cash

By Robert Hathorne | 10 May 2011 | 5 Comments

Aside from making it rain all over the folks at Skype to the cool tune of $8.5 billion, Microsoft is going to bring the awesome internet phone and video service to Microsoft platforms such as Xbox 360 and Kinect, Windows Phone, and other Windows devices. And I say it couldn’t come at a better time. In fact, during our most recent Games for Windows Live session, fellow blogger, Lawrence Sonntag, and I had to use Skype because we couldn’t get the in-game chat working.

Luckily, Microsoft is still going to support other Skype platforms, including PSP and Mac, which is totally mountain of cocaine, in your face ka-razy. There’s no date for when Skype will enjoy special integration into Microsoft gizmos, but I’m guessing E3 would be a good time to show that stuff off.

As long as they keep the group calls free I’m fine with this. But if they continue the micro-transaction madness that has already started, this is going to worry me.Skype is the national messenger in my country, few people use other messengers here.
