Sony Credit Card Data Was Encrypted

By Robert Hathorne | 28 April 2011 | 16 Comments

Has anyone actually received an email from Sony, or is all of the Sony debacle info just coming from the PlayStation Blog? One of the most recent updates is a FAQ addressing many user concerns, including how much of the data was encrypted:

Was my personal data encrypted?

A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

So the good news, Sony tried, I guess. Plus, because your credit card data was encrypted, it’ll take just a bit longer before it’s accessed. The bad news, after a massive search, Sony’s secret decoder ring has also turned up missing — bum, bum, bum!

If they plow through a few hundred boxes of Captain Crunch, they might get another ring. Here’s hoping.

    Because PC’s can’t be hacked.
And Xbox’s Modern Warfare 2 is completely safe.
Grow up, stop being gay little fanboys. This is serious shit, laughing at PS3 owners only makes you look like jackasses.

I did recieve an official e-mail from sony, basically just saying that all information could have been taken and used, and if we get phone calls or e-mails that seem like they are from sony that we shouldn’t answer them etc etc etc. is was really a warning about possible scams heading the users way than anything.

And then the Xbox owners cried, because they realised this stuff happens everyday to them, and Microsoft is too cheap to do anything :)

    @ Aaron
If this was happening everyday to xbox users i wouldn’t be paying $60 for the online.

Love how everyone digs into the PS3 owners, every console has it’s ups and downs right now this is one of the PS3′s downs. We’re all gamers so instead of being tossers why don’t you show a bit of sympathy. And unless you’ve forgotten Rat11j the XBox Live network was down for two weeks in 2007. When is this fanboy shit going to stop? The fact that I can play games with someone on another continent is kickass no matter what system I’m on.

I think people should stop pointing the finger at Sony especially Xbox users, this happened to them in 2007 and @Garrick what do you mean PC cant get hacked? PC’s can get hacked. Entire government and military networks get hacked all the time. Do a search for Gary McKinnon. He hacked into 97 United States military and Nasa computers. So stop acting Sony has done anything unthinkable.
