Tomb Raider Reboot Announced
Square Enix announced today that they’ll be taking another stab at making Tomb Raider a household name again… again. The new game, simply titled Tomb Raider, will chronicle Lara Croft’s very first adventure. After a terrible storm, Lara becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and must fight for her life. Fittingly, series creators Crystal Dynamics will develop the reboot.
“Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game,” Crystal Dynamics Head of Studio Darrell Gallagher said. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”
While the release doesn’t mention platforms or a projected release date, the website does list all the platforms you’d expect: PC, PS3, and 360. Game Informer’s January issue will run a cover story for Tomb Raider, so we’ll have to wait for that to get more information.
Tomb Raider has had something of an identity crisis throughout its run. After successful initial games, the series moved from Crystal Dynamics to other developers that didn’t find the same success. The series returned to Crystal Dynamics in 2006 with Tomb Raider: Legend. While this was trumpeted as a reboot of sorts at the time, the follow up titles Anniversary and Underworld still didn’t achieve the widespread success possible for the franchise. With this and Deus Ex, Square Enix is attempting to revive franchises acquired from Eidos.
