Codemasters announced the next game in the circuitous Operation Flashpoint series today, stating that it will depict a fictitious conflict between American Marines and the Chinese PLA in Tajikistan, along the Vakhsh River. The game will span three acts and support drop-in, drop-out co-operative gameplay for up to four players.
As far as the iterative improvements you can expect in the sequel, the press releases lists them thusly: “deeper narrative-led campaign, streamlined inventory and control system, a refined enemy and squad AI system, player class roles including customisable XP upgrades and loadout choice, close-quarters combat, new air support options and comprehensive tutorials.”
Previous Operation Flashpointses were interesting but ultimately frustrating due to their realistic damage modeling (one or two bullets and you’re out). Adding more players should help the problem, and also provide players some buds to share the tension with. Operation Flashpoint: Red River should release sometime in 2011 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
