The talented folks over at Penny Arcade have a lot of friends in the game industry. In talking with their friend from Bungie, Luke Smith, they asked a simple question regarding the multiplayer in Halo: Reach that revealed some great information:

Would the Co-op modes, such as Firefight, earn you credits toward character customization?

The answer was a resounding “Yes!” with further explanation that you would not only earn credits in Firefight, but also earn them in the Co-op campaign!

As an Avid fan of Co-op games, this comes as welcome news. More and more developers are understanding that online play doesn’t only have to be competitive.  Borderlands has been a minor obsession for the last few months because of its fantastic Co-op multiplayer. Everybody celebrates when someone in the group gains a level. Parts of Lost Planet 2 were, frankly, unplayable without joining up with your friends. The Firefight mode in Halo: ODST and Horde mode in Gears of War 2 are fantastic variations of online play.

The Bungie guys have shown that they know how to make a multiplayer shooter, with every iteration gaining additional polish. I can’t wait for Halo: Reach and you can bet I’ll be beating the campaign with my friends list.
