MW2 takes place 5 years after the events of the first game and this time around things are crazier then ever. Thats all the details I’m giving you about the story because otherwise I would spoil things for you. Everything about this game feels upgraded from the last title. Which I have to admit, is an amazing feat in itself. I didn’t think that it was possible to improve on Modern Warfare but somehow, the folks at Infinity Ward have managed to pull it off. The single player campaign is out of control. Some of the best storytelling in a First Person Shooter ever in my opinion. The story spans all over the globe and has so many twists and turns I had a hard time keeping up at times. The single player campaign took me around 7 and a half hours to get through and there was never a dull moment.
Now single player is all well and good but what everyone wants to know about when it comes to MW2 is the multiplayer. Does it live up to the insanely good multiplayer of the first title? Guess what? It goes above and beyond the first game. Its crazy, I swear that Infinity Ward tapped into my brain while I was playing the first game and listened to all of the things I wanted to have in the next game. The maps are bigger, better and more tactical. In multiplayer, players now have to option to really customize out a class. I mean, down to being able to select the kill streaks you want to have and there’s now a huge variety of kill streaks to choose from that you unlock as you rank up.One of the coolest new additions to multiplayer is the inclusion of death streaks. This time around if players are having a hard time in game and dying over and over again the game provides you with a little support. Whether its the ability to take all of the weapons and attributes of the person who just killed you or providing a boost in health, the game offers up numerous ways to get back in the fight. This is the kind of stuff that creates a huge amount of replay value for this title. You can take the time and spec out 5 different load-outs with different kill streaks and weapon customizations and play for a while with them and then go back and try out something completely different.
Another new inclusion in MW2 is a third person mode for multiplayer. Once unlocked, players will have the ability to play MW2 entirely in third person. I thought this was another great additional feature to add to the game that will keep things fresh for a very long time. Now one of my personal favorite additions to the game this time around is a brand new mode of play called Spec Ops. You play this mode with another teammate, or in certain cases you can try and take on the challenges alone. Each one of these challenges is unique and pretty damn hard. The levels range from running and gunning, defending a position, snowmobile races, or even taking control of a gunship or helicopter turret to clear a path for your teammate on the ground. Its fast paced and pretty damn epic. This is a welcome addition to the game that I hope to see included in future titles. The gameplay in this title is the stuff of legends. Even if Infinity Ward would have left out the 3rd person and Spec Ops modes this game still would have been epic so its pretty apparent that you are getting a huge value with this game.
Look at this game… just look at it. Seriously. Its one of the best looking FPS titles I’ve ever seen. Everything about this game and the way it looks screams perfection. The attention to detail in the graphics department is insane. Explosions look great, and the environments are varied and extremely authentic. You travel all over the world and each locale looks as you would expect it to. The characters in MW2 are beautifully modeled and rendered and the character animations are really impressive. I never felt like the enemies were doing canned movements, everything felt unique and appropriate. Thats a real testament to Infinity Ward, I played through an entire game experience and everything was fresh and exciting looking the entire play-through.
The Call of Duty franchise is known for its impressive sound design and Modern Warfare 2 is no exception. The game delivers a heart-pounding soundtrack that keeps the action moving and gets your adrenaline pumping. The voice-acting is top notch and all of the actors involved give great performances that really make this game feel like a big budget hollywood movie. The sound effects in the game really give a lot of life to this title. Mainly because everything sounds so damn authentic. From gunfire, to explosions, hell even the lingo the soldiers use sounds like the real deal. It all helps to create a very amazing gaming experience that’s definitely in a league of its own.
The controls in MW2 are the same as they were in the original title. Completely solid. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Tight and responsive, the controls really allow serious players to hone in their skills and it shows online.
There are so many things in this game that make it superior to its predecessor; a great continuation of a solid narrative, new modes like Spec Ops and third person perspective, the inclusion of an insane amount of customizable call signs and player cards online, beautiful graphics.. the list goes on and on. But look, the bottom line really here is really that Infinity Ward has created something special with Modern Warfare 2. Its a game that not only lives up to its own hype but blows away the previous game in the series. A feat many didn’t think was possible. It’s absolutely certain that myself and everyone else that purchases this game will be playing it religiously until the inevitable third game is released in the modern warfare series. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is a pay…as if there was any doubt.
